If you are seeking a role as a developer you should be maximising your GitHub account. GitHub is a code hosting platform for version control and collaboration, letting you and others work together on projects from anywhere.
Not everyone uses GitHub in a career-forward capacity, but you can. It’s another place to put your best foot forward. While it isn’t built to be a job-seeking tool per se, it is wise to manage it as deliberately as you might a LinkedIn page. Just as any social platform.
Make sure your page shows a pattern of habitual posting. Anything that suggests sporadic or inconsistent work habits is not a good look. Keep in mind that your account activity is one of the first things people see on your account. Believe it or not, some programmers carry bad attitudes into open source projects. Makes sure your communications are always clear, professional, and courteous. Team-mindedness is something recruiters want to see.
Add links to your social platforms on your Github Profile. Try to think of any place that someone might run into you in a professional capacity, and be curious about your technical abilities. Some places to begin, and links to my examples:
- LinkedIn allows you to specify arbitrary website links, but the feature isn’t very obvious to visitors. Consider adding links directly in your about section.
- Your personal blog or blog profile if you use a platform such as Medium or Blogger.
